First project with Ponoko, thought I did do a trial piece to see how small I could make the cuts.

Item is a medieval astronomical instrument called an "astrolabe." It can be used for telling time, navigation, surveying, casting horoscopes, and other useful medieval tasks.

Project used blond bamboo, relying upon the laser's wood-burning effect. Only vector engraving was used, raster fill was too expensive in terms of laser time. For some of the smaller numbers the laser intensity was too high, the wood burn became a blob.

Project was cut into several pieces, the layers were stacked to recreate the astrolabe's form.

The zillions of scale lines were created by a Python program. The lines were calculated using astrolabe equations, and exported as a CAD file. The file was imported into Adobe Illustrator to manually create the artistic parts.
